Use this form if you wish to apply for or renew a Direct Individual Membership (DIM) of BCA and, optionally, membership of BCRA. You can also use this form for Joint Membership of two DIMs at one address.

You may pay online or download a printable form. Even if you wish to pay by cheque, you can still complete the online form to save you having to print any paperwork.

BCA membership runs for a calendar year and expires on 31 December each year. There is a discount for DIMs who join part-way through the year.

Please note that you may subscribe to BCRA's periodicals Cave & Karst Science (ISSN 1356-191X) and Speleology (ISSN 1478-999X) without becoming a member of BCA using form M4. This may be the cheaper option if you live overseas or do not need other benefits of membership. Please check our web site bcra.org.uk/pub to see the most recent issues that have been published.

Other classes of membership are available - Caving Clubs (form M2), Associate Membership (form M3) and Club Individual Membership (CIM), which is only available to individuals who apply via their caving club. For a detailed explanation of membership classes, the membership benefits available, fees payable and so on, please see document D1. In summary, the main membership benefits available to Direct Individual Members are

  • Publications - Speleology, BCA Newsletter, BCA Handbook and, optionally, Cave & Karst Science
  • Insurance - Cover under BCA's third party public liability insurance scheme
  • Voting - Voting rights in the Association's general meetings and postal ballots

C. BCA Membership previous section next section

The BCA membership fee comprises several components. For details see How BCA Membership Works in document D1.

Joint Members pay the Basic Fee, which covers periodicals and services, only once, but every individual has to pay a contribution towards the Association's public liability insurance scheme. Note that...

Note 1: Non-cavers (and overseas cavers with their own national body insurance) may pay an insurance contribution at the lower rate.

Note 2: If you are a caver who has paid to join the insurance scheme via your caving club then you do not need to pay again, but you should give the details in the box to the right. In future years, you should pay the insurance with your BCA DIM membership instead of via your caving club.

Note 3: If you are a UK caver and you have adequate third-party cover from another body (e.g. FFS, SUI, university) then you do not need to pay again, but you should give the details in the box to the right. Note that 'adequate' does not mean a household or travel policy!).

Personal data shall be obtained only for the specified purposes of i) administering membership, subscription and sales services and ii) mailing of items solicited by its customers. Additionally, email addresses will be stored for the purpose of administering web and email forums to which the customer has opted to subscribe and by such action indicated his agreement to any stated or implied terms and conditions. If you have not already done so, please complete and return the equity questionnaire (MS Word version | PDF version). It is optional, but it helps BCA meet its obligations to the Sports Council.

  Under-18s
BCA requests that you indicate if an applicant is under 18 years of age. This is helpful to the Regional Caving Councils as they have to supply such statistics to various bodies as part of their applications for funding (e.g. for training, access, projects, conservation and so on).
